Unskilled/Essential

For my undergrad final, I created a campaign that challenges the stigma surrounding unions. I was inspired by the script being flipped for the working class at the start of the pandemic; initially viewed as “unskilled” labor meant to endure exploitive conditions, now “essential” to the public and economy.

Though today’s blue-collar workers may know their worth, actually organizing to demand the working conditions they deserve (like a living wage or safer environment) can be daunting. This package makes starting the conversation approachable, and serves as a reminder that the collective value of workers lies in every individual.

The Printing Process

Special thanks to Aaron Kent, Eric Copeland, and the rest of the team at DIY Printing for allowing me to use their time and facilities to learn how to screen print.

Based off of labor movement visuals used throughout history, this series views these same ideas through a contemporary lens and reflects who today’s labor movement represents. This consists of:

  • Three screen-printed 18x24 posters, each representing working class positions within major corporations (in this case delivery apps, fast food, and shipment warehouses)

  • An 11x17 print pamphlet with a digestible summary on starting union conversations, and 3 versions with each poster on the back

  • & a more in-depth informational site based off the pamphlet, navigated to via the QR code featured on every asset.
